Capri, May 28, 2016
The Southern Wind Shipyard’s 25th Anniversary celebration ended with a joyful prize giving ceremony that included music and dancing by the local folklore group Scialapopolo. Willy Persico and his achievements at Southern Wind Shipyard were honoured with a heartfelt standing ovation on the part of all participants. Seawave swept first place both in the Rolex Capri International Regatta and in the Southern Wind Trophy.
Seawave’s first place remained uncontested after racing was abandoned in light breezes on the final day of the Rolex Capri International Regatta and the Southern Wind Trophy. The Trophy podium line up remained unchanged throughout the event: Seawave, the debutante, placed first in both the ORC Superyacht Class and in the Southern Wind Trophy, followed by Grande Orazio by Pioneer Investments second in the Trophy and ORC Superyacht Class. Whisper placed third in the Southern Wind Trophy.
“A week ago we didn’t know how Seawave would perform as a racing boat, but now I can say she has real promise in the world of superyacht regattas,” says Volvo Ocean Race veteran Matt Humphries, part of the professional crew aboard this SW102RS. “She is responsive yet forgiving and is excellent in light air conditions.
Hopefully in our upcoming regattas we’ll get to try her in heavier air too, but for now I can say that she exceeded my expectations and I’m really looking forward to racing on her in the future.” Seawave’s owner, family and entire crew crowded the podium and celebrated Grand Prix car racing style, with a joyous champagne shower for all.
But this anniversary celebration was about more than just racing, it was about looking back over the past and planning for the future. The shipyard’s new projects, the RP90, the SW96 and the SW105 were officially unveiled at the owner’s dinner at the Canzone del Mare, where “the Ingegnere” Willy Persico gave a moving re-cap of the shipyard’s history from its foundation twenty five years ago to today. Persico’s achievements as the creator and driving force behind Southern Wind’s success were rewarded with a standing ovation in Capri’s Piazzetta on the part of the hundreds of participants in the Rolex Capri International Regatta as well as the Southern Wind “family” of owners, crew, staff and guests.
The 25th Anniversary Rendezvous and Trophy was a warm and heartfelt reunion, an exuberant celebration and a thrilling regatta made all the more special by the lovely scenery and gracious hospitality that Capri offered.
