HOW TO QUICKLY FINE TUNE AND BECOME EMPATHETIC WITH GUESTS

SELMA SCHAFFAR – Stewardess SW105 Sørvind

A lifelong passion for the sea is what inspired Selma to embark on an epic, two-year sailing odyssey across the Atlantic, from the South of France to Rio de Janeiro. She now brings that same enthusiasm for life, travel and adventure to her job as stewardess onboard Sørvind, the 105-foot high-performance yacht built by Southern Wind and currently available for charter.

As stewardess, you have the most direct interaction with Sørvind’s guests. How do you ensure that all their questions are addressed the moment they set foot onboard?
I always start by providing an on-deck briefing. This is a chance for the guests to get to know me, the boat and the rest of the crew. In addition to providing a full tour of the yacht, I cover such ‘basics’ as laundry, lunch and dinner times, daily routines, etc. Most importantly, I let them know that I am always available to answer any questions and help with any needs.

You seem to be a natural ‘people person’. Is there a secret for connecting with your guests?

Connecting with people not only comes naturally to me, it’s also something I really enjoy doing. I’m instinctively curious and love meeting new people and learning their unique stories. I guess this is why being a stewardess onboard an international charter yacht is the perfect job for me.
I also see every guest as an extended member of my own family. After all, it’s my responsibility to look after them and ensure they are comfortable and having a good time. This approach makes it easy to connect with my guests and, just as importantly, for them to connect and feel at ease with me.
In terms of my secret – I would say a simple smile can go a long way. Luckily, I like to smile!
