Setting Sail Beyond Boundaries: A Night IN LONDON with Skip Novak

A convivial gathering of friends all connected by a mutual love of sailing and the sea, was hosted in the historical and picturesque Clubhouse of the Royal Ocean Racing Club in the heart of London on April 10th.

Welcomed by the Commodore, Mrs. Deborah Fish, the highlight of the evening was the presence of sailing legend Skip Novak, who captivated our guests by sharing his extensive experience as a professional offshore racer, high-latitude navigator, and passionate adventurer.

A longtime friend of our CEO, Marco Alberti, Skip spent many years in Cape Town, where his expedition boat, Pelagic Australis, underwent annual refits. A connoisseur of Southern Wind yachts, Skip fondly remarked as he began his speech in the cozy RORC dining room in St. James Place:

“More often than not, when Pelagic Australis is in Cape Town for her annual refit, we’re docked at right angles to one of the elegant locally-built Southern Wind Shipyard yachts. They share the same pontoon berth for their commissioning. Southern Wind and Pelagic know each other well, and I like to refer to this pairing of opposites as the ‘beauty and the beast.’ There are no comparisons worth making, but we often find ourselves staring at each other in wonderment. We politely comment on the attributes of these two chalk-and-cheese yachts; one a belt-and-braces practical workhorse, the other a cutting-edge technological emporium and objet d’art.”

Skip pleased the guests with eyes catching images of his sailing and exploration adventures in the “Deep South” on board Pelagic Australis, where he braved and survived to  challenging conditions in the seas of Antarctica, Tierra del Fuego and the South Atlantic Islands.

To close the evening, Skip enticed owners by recommending relatively ice-free high-latitude itineraries achievable with a Southern Wind yacht, something we are looking forward to spectate.

The event provided an opportunity to celebrate the owners of SW108 Gelliceux, recently crowned winners of the St. Barths Bucket Regatta, and the owner of SW96 Liberty, the newest addition to the Southern Wind Family.

We extend our gratitude to our sponsors, Pantaenius Yachting Industry and Doyle Sails, for supporting this event, which served as an inspiring showcase of exceptional sailing.
