Southern Wind Reunion: Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much

On April 27th, during the first night of the Palma International Boat Show, the Southern Wind family reunited at the picturesque village of Gènova, located just outside of Palma de Mallorca, kicking off the Mediterranean yachting season.

The night was dedicated to the devoted captains and crew who work very hard to make every experience on board a Southern Wind yacht as perfect as can be. Such events bring to light what it means to be a part of this collective. The magic that happens on board is made possible by the solid communication and collaboration between our captains, crew and the shipyard. We always aspire to learn what we can from one another, and it is our shared passion for sailing that creates a bond which is a rare aspect of this industry. It is during occasions such as these that we can truly acknowledge and treasure that.

The event was also the perfect opportunity to introduce Mateo Llinas Martinez as the newest member of the Southern Wind Customer Care team. Mateo, who is based in Palma de Mallorca, has over 30 years of experience in the sailing industry and is a professional sailor himself. Having someone with his expertise situated in Palma, an important hub for many Southern Wind yachts year-round, will without a doubt prove to be a very valuable addition to the Customer Care team.

Making the most out of the occasion, the results of the new diesel electric hybrid propulsion system on Southern Wind’s latest 96-footer, Nyumba, were presented. During her sea trial last March, the BAE HybriGen® system was able to produce no less than 20 kilowatts at 11,5 knots. The batteries were charged at a pace of about 10 kWh. When sailing at higher speeds, the system can generate up to 30kWh. It uses the propeller as a hydro generator during sailing. The ability to control the pitch of the propeller makes it possible to find a balance in power generation and unwanted drag, allowing for optimal sailing.

Last but not least, the new project, the SW100X, was announced, which combines all knowledge and experience gained from the previous construction of nearly 40 performance sailing yachts within the 90-110 feet range, into a brand new, next-generation yacht made for true sailors. The SW100X will have the option of implementing the aforementioned hybrid propulsion system, contributing to a sustainable future.

We are looking forward to welcoming the crew back during the upcoming Rendezvous in Porto Cervo.
