Conceived for a second time Southern Wind owner, the fifth unit of the celebrated SW96 smart custom project is now underway at the South African shipyard.

Confirming the shipyard’s ability to realize an owner’s wishes, Southern Wind is set to deliver yet another carbon fibre performance yacht, with sleek hull lines penned by Farr Yacht Design and Exterior and Interior design by Nauta Design

Southern Wind Commercial Director, Andrea Micheli, proudly welcomes this important award for the Company, commenting: “This Design

The SW96 project has been confirmed as a strongly versatile base platform that grants the owner a range of possibilities to produce a unique and personalized yacht. This highly adaptable and multi-purpose design is equally capable as a long-range performance cruiser, competitive racer or the ideal yacht for the charter market.

With special emphasis on regatta optimization, SW96#05 is one of two SW96’s under construction, alongside SW96#04 GT that will be launched later this year. The latter represents an evolution of the SW96 with many unique customizations and featuring a sporty ‘GT’ deck design, square top mainsail, single level cockpit floor and a huge tender garage accommodating a 4.5m dinghy. Most importantly, 96#04 will be the first Southern Wind yacht to be fitted with a diesel electric hybrid propulsion system.

SW96#04_Under Construction

The first three SW96 sisterships are already at sea; Sorceress, Seatius, and Ammonite. Each confirming the capabilities of this line of superyachts and demonstrating the efficiency of Southern Wind’s Smart Custom approach to yacht construction. The SW96 benefits from cutting-edge design and superb craftmanship, making them a formidable opponent in any regatta. The SW96#01 Sorceress was developed for an owner who wanted a larger performance yacht to use in both transoceanic races and for blue water cruising with his family. For SW96#02 Seatius, the focus was on long-range performance cruising with a reduced crew and a high level of autonomy. In their very short lifetimes, both yachts have accumulated nearly 40,000 nautical miles on their logs and touched many ports between South Africa, the Mediterranean and North America.

SW96#03 Ammonite was conceived for a second time Southern Wind owner willing to alternate long-range cruising in remote destinations with a performance-oriented and regatta wining experience. Delivered in August 2020, she has spent the past 18 months cruising and racing in Australia and recently arrived in Europe for a summer of cruising in the Mediterranean.

SW96 yachts feature award-winning interiors, as in the case of SW96#02 Seatius. This yacht’s interior was designed by Nauta Design in collaboration with interior designer Jeroen Machielsen from Studio Hermanides and she was honoured with the ‘Best Interior Design – Sailing Yachts’ award at the prestigious Boat International Design and Innovation Awards in 2019.

About SW96#05

More specifically, SW96#05’s hull and deck are built in sandwich with a foam core and infused carbon skins for lighter weight and improved sound insulation. The lightship displacement of 58,800 kg grants excellent speed in light wind condition with a rig size taller than that of her sisterships. To enhance her performance soul, the yacht has been fitted with a high modulus carbon mast and boom as well as a EC6+ carbon rigging. SW96#05’s hull has full waterlines and straight end diagonals a wide, low, transom and full forward sections, which – together with a fixed bowsprit, a lifting keel (3.4-5.5m) and a twin rudder configuration – make her easy to sail and control in a wide range of conditions.

The uncluttered sightlines of the SW96#05 yacht’s Raised Saloon configuration blend in with a sleek coachroof that allows light to illuminate the interior through panoramic windows and hull portlights. The deck is finished in natural teak, and she features the standard two cockpit arrangement with minimal level changes between the aft manoeuvring cockpit and the forward guest area, assuring easy and safe circulation when cruising.

The interior of SW96#05 is centred around the full beam main saloon with additional TV lounge area forward to starboard. The Owner’s cabin is located forward with one guest cabin located forward to port and a second guest cabin amidship to port.

The spacious crew quarters are located further aft and contain the galley, crew mess, navigation area and direct access to technical space and engine room. Accommodation for four crew in two cabins.

Built in accordance with RINA Charter Classe regoulations, SW96#05 will be delivered at the end of 2023 the Southern Wind team are excited to welcome this new addition to the fleet and family.
